Ivan Weinel's research interests have focused on the interactions of institutional structures (customs, conventions, and more formal systems of rules and governance) with the tools and technologies that the society employs to carry out the basic economic and political functions upon which collective life depends. There are a number of specific and more or less familiar topics contained under this general heading, including the geopolitics of energy; privatization and the efficient provision of government services; the impacts of corporate entities on the formation of public policies, with special emphasis on media of mass communications and their role in the electoral process.
