The Philharmonia of Greater Kansas City will perform a free family concert at Park University on Sunday, March 30, featuring selections by Copland, Gounod, Mozart, Offenbach, Peck, Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky.

Music director and conductor Andres Franco will introduce the different instruments of the orchestra in "The Thrill of the Philharmonia," set for 3 p.m. at the Graham Tyler Memorial Chapel on the University’s Parkville Campus. The concert will also feature narration by Robert Pevitts, director of the International Center for Music at Park University, and pianist Robyn Meahl, winner of the 2008 Kansas City Music Teachers Association concerto competition.

The cost of the concert is partially underwritten by a grant from Target Corp., according to Philharmonia President C. Eugene Jacobs.

"It is this type of support that allows the orchestra to fulfill its community-outreach mission of providing family-oriented entertainment at an affordable cost and in a convenient location for a variety of audiences such as students, families and seniors who otherwise might not have accessibility to such high quality classical programs," Jacobs said.

The Philharmonia of Greater Kansas City is a not-for-profit community orchestra sponsored in part by Park University and comprised of students, adult volunteers, music instructors and professional musicians from the Kansas City metropolitan area. This year marks its 20th season.
