Doris Howell, '44, Ph.D., an internationally renowned leader in pediatrics and hospice care, will talk about leadership issues on Monday, March 31, in a Park University lecture honoring Women's History Month.
Howell, a retired pediatric hematologist/oncologist, is professor emerita of pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego, and director emerita at San Diego Hospice. Her lecture, "What Is Leadership?," is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Center for Distance Learning on the Parkville Campus.
She is the retired chairman of Family and Community Medicine at UCSD and continues to be active with a number of community and national agencies and foundations, including as honorary chair of the Doris A. Howell Foundation for Research in Women's Health, established in 1995. Howell was also previously a faculty member at the Harvard University School of Medicine and the Duke University School of Medicine, and chair of the department of pediatrics at the Medical College of Pennsylvania.
Howell received her medical degree from McGill University in Montreal in 1949. After completing an internship at Children's Memorial Hospital, Montreal, she completed a residency in pediatrics at Duke University Hospital, Durham, N.C., and a fellowship in pediatric hematology at Children's Medical Center at the Harvard Medical School, Boston.
She has served on the San Diego Hospice board of directors since its inception, and the hospice considers her a "driving force" behind it becoming a national model. She was elected director emerita in 1989.
At Women's Hisotry Month event, Howell will be honored by the University and the Presidential Leadership Program for Women Faculty as a "distinguished alumna" for inspiring women to define and pursue leadership excellence.
The Center for Distance Learning is located in the University's underground area. (To enter the underground, take a right after entering the campus and take the first left, labeled President Condit Entrance. Take this entrance and stay to the right. You will see Park University flags on the walls to your left. Follow the flags. The last flag is located at the entrance to the CDL parking lot, Pillar 222. CDL conference rooms are directly inside the main doors.)
