Park University's Music Program presents "In Memory Of" guest recital by the Aurora Trio, featuring soprano Rebecca Sherburn, pianist Patricia Higdon and flutist Mary Posses, on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 3 p.m. in the Graham Tyler Memorial Chapel.

The recital is free and open to the public, and will include works by Hugo Wolf, Stephen Paulus, Darius Milhaud, Arnold Schoenberg and Giacomo Meyerbeer.

A coloratura soprano, Rebecca Sherburn's performing experiences are varied and international. In addition to vast standard repertoire, she has distinguished herself as a concert artist performing many rarely heard contemporary chamber works. She has been featured by a variety of regional opera companies in the United States, Germany and Switzerland, often as the queen of the night. She was engaged by the Zurich opera as an apprentice, by the State Theater in Osnabreuck, Germany as a leading soloist, and in Hamburg where she sang Carlotta Giudicelli, the coloratura soprano role in Lloyd-Webber's "Phantom of the Opera."

Sherburn previously taught voice at the University of Southern California while completing a doctoral degree there and at East Los Angeles Community College. She holds an undergraduate degree from California State University in Los Angeles, and a Master of Music from the University of Southern California.

Patricia Higdon has led an active career as chamber musician, teacher and coach. After completing graduate work at the Cleveland Institute of Music, she began working as coach/accompanist with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City and subsequently joined the faculty of the Conservatory of Music of the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Each season she plays dozens of recitals with faculty, graduate students, and acclaimed artists from around the world. She is also in constant demand as a pianist for master classes and recording sessions.

In 2000, she joined coloratura soprano Rebecca Sherburn and flutist Mary Posses to form the Aurora Trio, and recently formalized a longtime professional collaboration with flutist James Hall; as the Hall/Higdon Duo, these two artists have been enthusiastically received in their rapidly growing schedule of recitals together and in November 2004 made their Carnegie Hall debut.

Mary Posses has appeared throughout the United States in solo, orchestral and chamber concerts, including performances in New York's Tully Hall, Carnegie Recital Hall, Lincoln Center Library, CAMI Hall and the Metropolitan Museum. She has also been an invited performer and speaker at many National Flute Conventions.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music, a Master of Music, a Master of Musical Arts and a Doctor of Musical Arts from Yale School of Music.

Actively involved in contemporary music, Posses has premiered works for flute by such leading composers as James Mobberley, Harvey Sollberger and Yehudi Wyner. Orchestral experience includes 17 years as principal flutist of the Stamford Symphony in Connecticut, principal flute positions with the Orchestra of Santa Fe and the New Haven Opera Theatre, and frequent performances in the Kansas City Philharmonic. She appears on a CD of the music of Jehan Alain with organist James Higdon and on a CRI recording of works by Yehudi Wyner. She has judged the National Flute Association's Young Artist and Master Class Competitions, GM/SEVENTEEN MAGAZINE Competition, Alpha Delta Kappa International Competition, Des Moines Symphony Competition, and numerous MTNA Competitions. A Kansas City Flute Association co-founder and former President and Newsletter Editor, she has been its Master Class Coordinator for more than 20 years. She was elected to the NFA Board of Directors, was appointed to two terms on the College Music Society's Performance Advisory Panel, and currently serves on the Artistic Advisory Board of the Chamber Music Society of Kansas City.
