The Philharmonia to Present Season-OpenerBy Summer A. Evans - September 26, 2005 - 9:01 amEmail this article | Printer friendly page | Media Inquiries The Philharmonia will present their season-opening performance "The New World by Dvořák" on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 5 p.m. in the Park University Graham Tyler Memorial Chapel in Parkville, Mo. The repertory will feature Czech composer, Antonín Dvořák's Slavonic Dance in C Major, Opus 46, No. 1 and his most famous work, New World Symphony. The concert, under the baton of second-year conductor and music director Andrés Franco, also will feature a Dvořák's Cello Concerto with featured performer Martin Storey, award-winning chamber musician and former principal cellist of the Royal Philharmonic and the London Symphony. Storey is also an assistant professor of Music, and a faculty member for the Youth Conservatory for Music and the International Center for Music at Park University. A special reception to honor visiting diplomat Jana Kalimonova, the second secretary-culture from the Czech Republic Embassy in Washington, D.C., will follow the concert. The concert will be performed in memory of Steven Peters, the orchestra's principal bassist. Financial assistance for this project has been provided by the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency. Tickets will be available at the door and are $8 for adults, and $5 for students and 65+ seniors. For more information, please contact The Philharmonia President C. Eugene "Jake" Jacobs at (816) 588-8033. About Andrés Franco Andrés Franco serves as conductor and director of The Philharmonia of Greater Kansas City. Among the younger people to assume such responsibility in the United States, Franco has appeared with several orchestras both in his country and in South America. Among them are the Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra, the Medellin Philharmonic, the EAFIT Symphony, the University of Kansas Orchestra and the Texas Christian University Symphony Orchestra. In November 2004, he assumed the position of Artistic Advisor for the Medellin International Music Festival in his native Colombia. There he conducted the Medellin Philharmonic. In 2005 he conducted a production of L. Bernstein's "Candide" with the University of Kansas Opera. About Martin Storey Born in Norwich, England, Storey attended the Royal Academy of Music in London on an Associated Board Scholarship. After winning all the prizes in cello and chamber music at the academy, he continued his studies at New England Conservatory in Boston as a Fulbright Scholar. Storey has played as part of the English Chamber Orchestra of Europe and has performed contemporary music as principal cellist of the London Sinfonietta. He has given master classes at the Royal Academy and Trinity College in London as well as in South Korea, Taiwan, Brazil and the Czech Republic. He performs regularly in Japan and England as a soloist and is the cellist of the Quartet Accorda, Kansas City's resident string quartet. Storey currently an assistant professor of Music, and a faculty member for the Youth Conservatory for Music and the International Center for Music at Park University.
