Academic Support Services Director Debra McArthur recently visited Marla Asberry's first grade class at Glendale Elementary School in Independence, Mo. to assist with the students' ongoing investigation of the work of writers.

Park University education student Carrie Hallensleben asked McArthur to speak with the children since their teacher is devoting the school year to implementing Lucy Calkin's writer's workshop. Hallensleben is currently working with the class to fulfill the requirements for ED 359D Early Childhood Teaching Strategies and Practicum.

"The kids asked great questions, and I could tell they were all thinking of themselves as writers," said McArthur. "There is a wonderful feeling of excitement about writing in the classroom."

An author of four books, McArthur has presented at numerous schools and community events. She is the author of The Dust Bowl and the Depression in American History; The Kansas-Nebraska Act and "Bleeding Kansas" in American History; Desert Storm: The First Persian Gulf War in American History; and Raoul Wallenberg: Rescuing Thousands from the Nazis' Grasp.
